Art and Earth Exhibit Reception and Awards Announced

There was a great turnout for the opening of the Third Annual Art and Earth juried exhibit last night in Martinsburg. The exhibit, sponsored by the Berkeley Arts Council, is on display in the gallery space at The Arts Centre, located at 300 West King Street in Martinsburg. The exhibit is open Fridays 2-6pm, Saturdays 12-6pm, and Sundays, 12-3pm through May 11.

Ten awards were announced and certificates were presented to the artists who were present. The Best in Show award went to Cathy Wilkin of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia for her “June 14″ work in mixed media. The reception was very well attended and included participating artists from Georgia and Tennessee.

Third Annual Art and Earth Juried Exhibit Opens April 20.

The Third Annual Art and Earth Juried art exhibit opens Saturday, April 20 at The Arts Centre gallery with a reception from 5-7pm. The exhibit will show 40 works of art by artists from all around West Virginia and 11 other states. The exhibit will be on display in The Arts Centre, 300 West King Street in Martinsburg, through Saturday May 11. Gallery hours are: Friday 2-6, Saturday, 12-6, and Sunday 12-3.

The juror for this year’s exhibit is Dr. Geraldine Kiefer, Associate Professor of Art History at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Free Spring Papercraft and Jewelry Workshops

Spring Papercraft Workshop

The Berkeley Arts Council is sponsoring a free papercraft workshop on Sat. April 20th from 9:00am to 12noon at the Robert C. Byrd Health Science Center, on the City Hospital Campus, in Martinsburg.

The workshop will feature an overview of some basic to advanced techniques scrapbooking techniques, (stamping, embellishing, embossing, etc.), some of the newest products available, a display of various papercrafting projects, and lots of creativity and fun.

Come share your ideas and bring a friend. Do you have a favorite project or technique? Feel free to bring projects for show and tell. This is a “make and take” workshop. There is a $12 supply fee, paid at the door for a supply kit. Space is limited.

Make it, Take it and Repair it- Jewelry Design workshop

The Berkeley Arts Council will sponsor a free workshop on Saturday, April 20th, 9:00am to 12 noon, Robert C Byrd Health Science Center, in Martinsburg. Learn to make jewelry with design, texture and color elements in mind. Master basic techniques, tools and supplies to make a necklace, bracelet and earrings

Bring your loved but broken jewelry to fix yourself. The workshop is free, and participants will bring their own beads. Taught by Stephanie Godley, designer for Pink Flamingo Jewelery. Berkeley Arts Council Announces Water Color Workshop with Tom Lynch

The Berkeley Arts Council is pleased to announce a Watercolor Workshop with renowned watercolorist and instructor Tom Lynch on Aug. 12-15 at the Berkeley 2000 Recreation Center in Martinsburg, WV. Tom Lynch is returning to Martinsburg after a successful workshop here last summer. The BAC is very excited to bring this opportunity to our regional artists and to invite artists from outside our area to join us for this excellent workshop. The cost for the four-day workshop is $400 plus food and lodging. Space is limited and participant registration is on a first come, first served basis. Tom Lynch brings to his class the same enthusiasm and energy as seen on his nationally known TV series “Fun with Watercolor” that has been on PBS for the last 20 years. The objectives of this workshop are to show the vast range and flexibility of watercolor. This includes how to put emotion and conviction into painting by exploring, experimenting, and developing the creativity of each individual. Tom makes the process of painting fun, along with sharing his enthusiasm and demonstrating new techniques in an atmosphere that makes the intermediate and advanced painter feel welcome!

Last Chance for “Photograph Your Art” Workshop

There’s still time and space available for you to sign up for the “How to Photograph Your Artwork” workshop that will be presented on Saturday morning, March 23. The location will be at the Triple Brick Museum, 313 East John Street, Martinsburg, WV.

We have the minimum registered so the workshop will go, but not nearly as many people who have told me that they need this training.

Berkeley Arts Council Showcases Student Artwork

A selection of student artwork from the Berkeley Arts Council January-February art classes is on display at the Martinsburg Berkeley County Library.

The artwork was created during the classes in oil and watercolor painting, pottery, and the “Art Exploration” class for home school students.

Most of the participants were beginners and Jane Horst, Arts Council Vice President and coordinator for the Art Instruction Program says that “It’s amazing how much creativity there is in our community. All it takes is a little encouragement to bring it out.”

The Art Instruction Program is part of the Berkeley Arts Council’s mission to “Amplify the Arts” for local residents. The program presented with cooperation from the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Department and is supported in part by a grant from Ecolab. New Workshops for Artists

The Berkeley Arts Council is offering three new workshops for artists and artisans.

“How to Write an Artist Statement” taught by Nancy McKeithen

Do you know how to write an effective artist statement? Artists frequently must provide artist statements for all kinds of exhibits, whether they are major juried or solo opportunities or showing a few pieces in a local gallery.

Saturday, March 9 from 9am to 12noon ($35 BAC members $45 non-members.)
Registration Required; Deadline Tuesday, March 5.

“How to Photograph Your Artwork” taught by Rip Smith

Unless you are content to do your art and just let it sit in your home or studio, you want to get your work out where it can be enjoyed and possibly even purchased by others. Accomplishing this has become more and more dependent on your being able to provide high quality photographs of your work

Saturday, March 23 from 9am to 1pm ($40 BAC members $50 non-members.)

Berkeley Arts Council Offers Spring Art Classes

The Berkeley Arts Council announces their spring Art Instruction Program for adults and young people ages 12 and up. Classes will begin the week of February 25. The selection of evening courses includes Pottery/Ceramic Sculpture, Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor Painting, Introduction to Oil Painting, and a new class in Mixed Media, for creative individuals that want to try a little bit of everything.

A daytime class for home school students ages 12-18 titled Creative Art Exploration, is offered on Monday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

All classes are taught by certified art instructors, and local, well-known artists who are experienced teachers.

Registration for each series of six, two hour classes is on first come- first served basis. Watercolorist Anna Hogbin discusses the techniques used in painting sunset scenes during the Introduction to Watercolor Painting class.

The payment of $75 can be made by check or by mail, or through the website using a credit card or PayPal. The classes are offered with the cooperation of the MBC Parks and Recreation Board and are held at the Berkeley 2000 Recreation Center. The pottery class is held at the pool building at War Memorial Park.

Berkeley Arts Council Awards Community Grants

Also seeking new proposals.

The Berkeley Arts Council has awarded grants to fund two more projects in its “Amplify the Arts” grant program.

A grant to the WVU School of Medicine will provide funding for a Certified Art Therapist to present a workshop to healthcare students on the history and uses of art therapy in patient care and in judicial arenas. The workshop will be opened to WVU Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine as well as nursing students at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College.

A grant to the Berkeley Community Chorus will support a spring concert to be presented in May at the Westview Baptist Church. The grant will help fund expenses related to the rehearsal venue, music and other supplies, and the stipend for the accompanist.

Also announced is the third cycle of the program. The maximum grant amount has been increased to $750.00 and proposals will be accepted until February 25, 2013. Details and application forms are available on the Berkeley Arts Council web site at www.berkeleyartswv.org/amplify/.
